“The question for schools is no longer simply what enrichment we offer, but what difference it makes.”

Pupils at Thomas Walling Primary Academy had the chance to discover something a little different when they experienced Ada and the Code Crusaders, an interactive opera production by English Touring Opera (ETO).

Bringing together music, storytelling and audience participation, the production introduced pupils to opera in an accessible and enjoyable way. With songs to learn and opportunities to join in, children could become part of the performance and see how music helps bring a story to life.

The experience was made possible through the Laidlaw Foundation, which supported opera opportunities for pupils across all Laidlaw Schools Trust Academies last academic year.

For many children, this may have been their first experience of opera. Having the chance to explore a new art form, take part and enjoy a live performance can open the door to new interests and creative experiences.

This World Opera Day, we're celebrating opportunities like these and the importance of making sure all young people can experience the arts, regardless of their circumstances.
