On Monday 20th October, Nursery and Key Stage One children at Thomas Walling Primary Academy enjoyed a day of activities exploring the vibrant traditions of Diwali.

KS1 pupils discovered the stories and customs behind this special festival and took part in a range of creative activities. They made colourful chalk rangoli patterns, painted fireworks, created beautiful Diva lamps and practised traditional Diwali dances.

Meanwhile, Nursery children learnt about the preparations and celebrations surrounding Diwali, designed their own mehndi patterns, danced to music, created firework patterns in glitter trays and shared lunch with friends.

“It’s been lovely celebrating Diwali in Nursery this week. We talked about how it’s a special time for many families and the different ways it’s celebrated.”

- Anna Louise Scott, Nursery teacher at Thomas Walling Primary Academy

Through these activities, the children gained a deeper understanding of Diwali’s importance, celebrating light overcoming darkness and reflecting on values such as kindness and togetherness.

This learning also helped pupils to appreciate different cultures and festivals, encouraging curiosity and respect for the world around them.

“We're so proud of how the children embraced learning about Diwali. They were so engaged and curious about the range of stories we explored."

- Lily Keilty, Assistant Headteacher at Thomas Walling Primary Academy
